Width: 25' to 60' (40' at age 30)
Hardiness Zone: 5 to 8
Crown: conical, some trees becoming globose with age, medium-fine texture

Description:

A handsome tree of variable form with attractive foliage, native to China and Japan.  Growth rate is medium to fast after establishment.  Slightly shaggy bark of older trees and reddish-brown twigs add interest in winter.

Advantages: Seldom suffers from diseases or insects.  Subtly attractive in all seasons.
Limitations: Suffers from drought and compacted soils.  Trunk sunburns easily when young.  May be difficult to find in some regions.
Site and Culture: Somewhat difficult to transplant; recovers slowly.  Plant in spring as B&B or container grown tree.  Prefers full sun and rich, moist soil.  Water during droughts until well established.
Cultivars: Weeping forms have been selected, but none for street tree traits; they are not easy to find.
